I am Alberto, and I design product.

I can draw a product in the morning and be standing at the injection moulding machine in the afternoon. It is the reason my projects reach the workshop without surprises.

Portrait of Alberto G. Virgos

I come from a background tied to craft and to running a business, where I learned to value process and the responsibility behind every decision.

I weigh many variables at once: use, material, manufacturing, impact and context, so the answers are coherent and last. I am interested in design that holds a conversation with time, surroundings and people.

I work where industry meets craft. In the morning I run the technical side of a mould factory; at night I set a stone by hand. Each teaches the other the same thing: the material leads.

What you can commission

How I work

Three phases, in this order and without skipping the first. Half the craft is solving a part; the other half is getting a team and a client to reach the end together.

Understand

Before drawing: what the problem is, how many units, who manufactures and what the part can cost. Most projects that go wrong were decided wrong right here.

Give shape

Concept, 3D modelling, prototyping and as many iterations as it takes. I show progress at every phase: nobody has to trust a final surprise.

Manufacture

Mould, material, supplier and first production run. This is where design is won or lost, and where by trade I can be standing at the machine.

Designing with what is already there

Four days at the Domaine de Boisbuchet, in France, with my classmates from the master. We built a floating island without buying a single material.

The floating cork and bamboo island with its lanterns lit on the lake

The reference was the chinampas of Mexico: farming islands that have floated for centuries without bringing anything in from outside. So we did the same. We gathered the cork and bamboo left over on site, planted on top and returned it to the lake.

The installation is ephemeral; the shelter it leaves for the flora and fauna is not. We thought the same way about the corn lanterns: only the kernel of the cob gets used, and the leaf is thrown away. We dried it, and it ended up as the skin that filters the light.

Designing is not always adding. Sometimes it is looking at what is already there and giving it one more life.

Let us design the future together

Tell me where you are now and I will tell you where I would start. No cost, no strings.
